Cedar County Historical Society Museum and Prairie Village

Cedar County Historical Society Museum and Prairie Village, 1094 Hwy 38, Tipton (Cedar County)

The Cedar County Historical Society (CCHS) stands as a vibrant testament to the dedication of residents who sought to preserve and celebrate the rich historical legacy of Cedar County. From its humble beginnings in the courthouse basement, CCHS has burgeoned into a significant cultural hub, featuring a Museum and Prairie Village that vividly bring history to life.

The recently expanded Museum serves as the campus’s centerpiece, offering historical exhibitions, a library meeting room, and extensive archives that collectively narrate the county’s storied past. Beyond collecting artifacts and documents, CCHS has embraced the preservation of historical structures, forming the Prairie Village. Here, visitors can explore an original 1842 cabin, a blacksmith shop, and various other buildings that capture snapshots of life during different eras. Notably, the South Bethel Church, the oldest surviving church west of the Mississippi, remains active for special occasions. The campus also includes the Bedbug Schoolhouse, exemplifying rural education’s foundational role in Iowa, and a new building housing a vast agricultural collection alongside intricate woodwork by local educator Shorty Beckler.

Through the vision of its founders and the dedication of a forward-thinking board, CCHS continues to fulfill its mission of preserving and sharing Cedar County’s rich history, offering an immersive experience from pioneer days to the present.
