Kaufmann 1859 Barn, 1536-330th Street, Wilton (Cedar County)
One of Cedar County’s oldest barns this barn was built in 1859. This interesting and very original barn is a 36 x 26 split level barn. The rafters and sheeting were cut at the owners (John Leith) sawmill. The main beams and support poles used in construction were all hewn by hand and the ax marks can still be seen. The frame of the barn is held together with hand-made wooden pegs from the nearby forest around Sugar Creek. The haymow covers half the actual barn. The basement originally held 12 horses. The basement stable was used as a livery stable for the small inn that sat across the road. The current owner’s great grandfather and uncles would pass the Leith homestead each day going to school. The barn has been in the Kaufmann family for 151 years – 5 generations.
