Spear Barn, 120 E. 9th Street, Tipton (Cedar County) – just behind the Subway restaurant
Alexander Spear was a prominent farmer and livestock breeder in Cedar County. He moved to Tipton in the mid 1890’s where he built a large house and barn in what was then the north edge of town (now within city limits). The barn had 6 box stalls for the imported stallions and the driving horses when they were being trained. Once trained, the horses were sold both nationally and internationally. Over the years, the Spears also bred racehorses, polo ponies, and cavalry mounts for the U.S. Army.
